The Reggie Ramble gravel bike race was this past weekend and we rode and suffered in the 35C heat that felt like 40C. I consumed 6 litres of fluid over the 70k course. It was a sweat feast, so
why do this?
First off, I went with a couple of good friends and knew a bunch of others there - it was another epic opportunity to ADVENTURE TOGETHER!
Second, in our world of endless comfort it’s always great to get uncomfortable and push ourselves. Doing so helps to realize our inner strength, to reawaken a power inside ourselves that otherwise goes dormant, and to remind ourselves we can overcome and do difficult things.
Third, I just LOVE the vibe of events like this. Being there, surrounded by the full spectrum of pro athletes down to amateur weekend warriors like me, brings me so much joy to be part of this community.
Fourth, the Northumberland Hills are seriously amazing. I’ve traveled the world, have been to around 35 countries or so, and yet I am constantly in awe of the beauty of the hills just minutes north of where I live.
Northumberland County is a gravel riding mecca.
Fifth, there are quiet messages that God is trying to impart on us, to get us to listen to. But the noise and distraction of our lives tends to overrun, overshadow and make them very difficult to hear. The first half or three-quarters of an event like Reggie we chat, talk, laugh but
that final hour or so, it’s head down, grinding, everyone gets quiet, reflective, focused and in those moments, the quiet whispers can be heard.
I’ve previously talked about the paradox of how endurance training leads to life.
The clarity of thought through endurance training and racing has provided me many of my life’s revelations.
This is probably the most addictive part of endurance sports for me and why I’ve been in love with long distance running and cycling, for many decades now.
This was the last race and event I had on my calendar. I’m looking for new ideas and inspiration, though I’m somewhat thinking I may run La Classique in Mont Tremblant this fall. But am open to fun and adventurous ideas.
Here’s a little ultra running inspiration a good friend sent me.
